Light sickness EPP:
Treatment of a genetic defect

Erythropoietic protoporphyria – EPP for short – is an extremely rare disease. The so-called light disease is caused by a genetic defect and is usually passed on to subsequent generations. Around 400 patients suffer from it in Germany, although the number of unreported cases is much higher. They react with painful burns if they are exposed to sunlight for too long. Even artificial light sources can cause symptoms. As a healthy person, you can hardly imagine the agony and limitations that come with it.

In conversation with Dr. Esther Wißmüller

René Jacobs from the Akademie der Bayerischen Presse conducted an interview with a sufferer. The journalist also spoke to Dr. Esther Wißmüller from the dermatology department at Sendlinger Tor about treatment options and the prospects of a cure.
