There are two tried and tested procedures to choose from: liquid or microfoam sclerotherapy or, in some cases, laser therapy.
Spider veins are tiny, dilated skin veins (veinctasias) that usually appear on the legs and are visible due to their reddish-bluish coloration. They are caused by a weakness in the vein walls or venous valves, whereby the blood accumulates in superficial veins and these become permanently dilated.
Risk factors:
From a medical point of view, spider veins can be a first warning sign of deeper vein diseases such as varicose veins or chronic venous insufficiency. A duplex sonography (ultrasound) helps to rule out relevant reflux problems in the larger trunk veins. It is therefore advisable to consult a specialist if this occurs – even if the change initially appears to be purely aesthetic. More on diagnostics & treatment options.
A proven procedure in which a foamed sclerosing agent (polidocanol) is injected into the affected vessels. The sclerosing agent displaces the blood, specifically irritates the inner wall of the vein and leads to a controlled closure of the vein. The body then breaks down the vessel.

Lasers can also work well for superficial, fine spider veins. A high-energy, targeted light penetrates the skin, is absorbed by the red blood pigment (haemoglobin) and closes the affected veins with pinpoint accuracy.

Both procedures are scientifically recognized. The German Society of Phlebology (DGPL) recommends both as first-line treatment for spider veins (2020 guideline). The combination of sclerotherapy and laser shows the best aesthetic results in current studies.

After the treatment, the affected spider veins are closed and are broken down naturally by the body. This can make the skin appear more even, smoother and healthier – the first effects are often visible early on, with the full results becoming apparent in the following weeks.

After spider vein treatment, you will usually be able to resume your normal social activities immediately. Compression stockings are usually not necessary and light sporting activities are also possible again after just a few days. The affected vessels are broken down naturally by the body – without any additional measures.

Although spider veins and varicose veins often occur together, they differ in cause, course and need for treatment.
