When clots become a danger

Causes & symptoms of thrombosis

A thrombosis is caused by a blood clot that partially or completely blocks a vein. The deep veins of the leg (DVT) are particularly frequently affected. Symptoms can include

  • Swelling (unilateral)
  • Feeling of tension or pain in the legs
  • Overheated, reddened areas of skin
  • Feeling of heaviness or visible vein changes

Medical background & risk factors

Thrombosis is often caused by a combination of several factors, known as the Virchow triad:

Slowing of the blood flow

(e.g. due to immobility, varicose veins)

Damage to the vessel wall

(e.g. after operations or infections)

Increased tendency to clot

(e.g. due to genetic factors, hormones, tumors)

There is also scientific evidence of an increased risk with:

– Long-haul flights or long car journeys

– Smoking

– Taking hormonal contraceptives

– Pregnancy & puerperium

– Tumor diseases and chemotherapy
