The most important aspects of laser therapy at a glance
Dr. Wißmüller particularly appreciates the high precision and reliable effectiveness of modern laser therapy
What complaints do patients most often come to you with?
Many patients come to us because of venous complaints – such as visible spider veins, varicose veins, a feeling of heaviness and tightness or swelling of the legs. Many also seek clarification if they notice recurring vein inflammation or skin changes. As we are a team of several specialists in our practice, we also treat a wide range of dermatological conditions and aesthetic concerns.
When do we talk about spider veins and varicose veins? What is the difference?
Spider veins are very fine, superficial veins that are usually perceived as annoying for aesthetic reasons. However, they can also be an initial indication of a deeper vein problem and an early sign of the onset of varicose veins. Varicose veins, on the other hand, are clearly enlarged, tortuous veins that are caused by a dysfunction of the venous valves and are more medically relevant, as they can cause symptoms such as swelling, pain or skin changes.
What treatment options are available to you for venous disorders?
Depending on the findings, we have a variety of modern therapies at our disposal. Endovenous laser therapy is central to this, which we use to treat the main and side branches. We also carry out foam or liquid sclerotherapy, particularly for spider veins or smaller side branches, and, if necessary, mini phlebectomies (mini-surgical phlebectomy for side branch varicose veins). Which method or combination of methods is appropriate in each individual case always depends on the individual vein status and symptoms.
How did you become aware of the possibility of laser therapy?
I became interested in minimally invasive vein therapies early on and first came into contact with endovenous procedures during my phlebology training at the clinic in Hamburg. I then worked intensively with this method for more than a decade at the clinic and developed it into an integral part of our therapeutic spectrum.
What features of laser treatment do you particularly appreciate?
Laser therapy is an extremely gentle and at the same time very effective method. It does not require any incisions and enables patients to return to their everyday lives quickly. I particularly appreciate the high precision and reliable effectiveness of modern laser systems.
