Venous disorders: Possibilities of prevention
As mentioned in the chapter Varicose veins – a widespread disease and its causes, the predisposition to venous disorders is predominantly genetic. Nevertheless, there are methods to prevent spider veins and varicose veins by wearing the right clothes, appropriate footwear, eating a balanced diet and getting enough exercise. We have summarized the most important findings here:
Sports and exercise
Exercising the leg muscles has a positive effect on the peripheral venous pumps and decongests the legs. Walking exercises should be done as briskly as possible and preferably on forest paths. Jogging on soft ground is also beneficial. Sports such as swimming and cycling are optimal because they are performed while relieving body weight.
Shoes and clothing
High heels virtually disable the peripheral venous pump. As a result, feet and legs swell. Flat shoes are better, especially sports shoes. Constrictive clothing should also be avoided. Compression stockings provide significant relief for congestion symptoms during the day.
Diet and medications
A diet rich in fiber promotes digestion and is also optimal with regard to venous disorders. This is because chronic constipation has a detrimental effect on the outflow in the pelvic veins. There are also natural remedies whose effectiveness has been proven in studies. These so-called phytopharmaceuticals include the seeds of horse chestnut, butcher’s broom and sweet clover. However, the costs are usually not reimbursed.
Travel and sunbathing
With venous circulatory disorders, the tendency to swell is greater. There is therefore a risk of thrombosis, especially during long bus and air travel. To avoid this, you should drink as much as possible, exercise and possibly wear compression stockings. When on a beach vacation, it is advisable to cool the legs regularly in the sea. Exposure to the sun itself is not harmful, but intense heat is.
Other preventive measures
It is also good to elevate the legs – preferably at midday – for about 20 minutes. Kneipp watering also has a positive effect. They stimulate the vessels to contract and thus reduce venous capacity. It is optimal to take another cold shower with the legs in the evening.
